Presenting the debut release on Canada's Hyperopia Records, a jazzy double-sided dose of tasty salsa from Wilson Acevedo & the Jazz Meets Salsa Orchestra!

The namesake of “Gury's Mambo” is DJ Gury Gury, a legendary Toronto-area Latin music DJ and co-owner of Hyperopia. Let’s rewind the clock a decade and find ourselves at Gury Gury’s Día De Los Tres Reyes party. The headliner is multi-instrumentalist, composer, vocalist and bandleader Wilson Acevedo, a Canadian musician of Colombian heritage known for his stint in the recently disbanded Caché, one of Canada’s finest salsa groups of the early 2000s. Unbeknownst to Gury or the crowd, Acevedo chose that night to premier the brand new tune “Gury’s Mambo," an upbeat “descarga” (jam session) with a vocal refrain written in tribute to the party’s host and lead music selector, Gary Verrinder, aka DJ Gury Gury. The track combines a spy-movie themed lead melody, guaguancó beat and sparkling percussion with piano, vibes and brass stabs to great effect. In fact Gury was so pleased with the song he adopted it as the theme for his Viejoteca radio show and it soon became a popular cut with dancers in local clubs and salsa congresses. Now, ten years later, we finally have it on wax through an international partnership between Hyperopia and Peace & Rhythm.

The B side of the 45 is “Ritmo Sentimental," an instrumental number in the classic Village Gate tradition of “Salsa Meets Jazz” with equal portions of jazzy improvisation, romantic melody and blissful beats. Silky smooth acid jazz keyboards set up the soulful horn section to take turns with a muted trumpet solo that floats over a hot, danceable rhythm. Perfect for a disco-ball sparkling dance floor or a candle-lit dinner.

Salsa fans who like Tito Puente, Fruko y Sus Tesos and Poncho Sanchez will dig “Gury's Mambo” and “Ritmo Sentimental” by Wilson Acevedo & the Jazz Meets Salsa Orchestra. Available in black and limited green vinyl with a nice retro-looking Art Deco design picture sleeve.

This is the first in a series of salsa 45s inspired by Gury's long time Viejoteca radio show on CFRU 93.3FM. This series will bring never-before-on-vinyl dancefloor classics of the Viejoteca show to DJ-ready 7-inch singles that are sure to be a hit not only with Gury’s global listenership but with new fans as well.

Peace & Rhythm have teamed up with our long time friends to the North, and we’re excited to introduce you all to Toronto's newest suppliers of heavy wax. The label has several releases in the works, so lots more to come!
