These pioneers of prog cumbia have crafted a sound all their own. Camino pa' tu Casa, the first of four songs on Crackadoom, comes out just in time for Dia De Los Muertos, capturing the vibe of the season and setting the tone for the musical journey to come. \n\nKeep watch for the full EP coming in December!\n\n“ _Crackadoom_ is **MNGWA** at their rawest and most instinctual. In the midst of a busy stretch of summer festivals, the eight core members of **MNGWA** carved out a period of 3 days in remote Williams Lake, central British Columbia, where the EP was recorded in its entirety. Vancouver-based veteran sonic alchemist **Brandon Hoffman** (**Blocktreat**) engineered and produced this record from the beginning to end (from the comfort of his own cabin), and his idiosyncratic approach to recording challenged **MNGWA** to set aside the maximalistic sheen of their previous records and embrace imperfection. Hoffman's choice to track the songs without a metronome gives _Crackadoom_ a living, breathing and almost live quality. _Crackadoom_ is **MNGWA** 's most stripped-down and cohesive release yet, where the two worlds of psych rock and cumbia are integrated more than ever. Sung entirely in Spanish, the lyrics allude to topics as wide-ranging as modern political tyranny (plenty to go around!), media and technological mind control, and communing with ancestral spirits.”",

"body": "We are incredibly excited to bring Poland’s **Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra** into the **Peace & Rhythm** family with the release of their 3rd full length album _Antibody_!\n\nOver the last seven years, **WAO** has crafted a style of afrobeat all their own. The frontline vocal trio of **Anna Piotrowska** , **Agata Dąbrowska** , and **Magdalena Kuś** creates a timbre that’s unmistakably **Warsaw Afrobeat**. Aggressive yet beautiful vocals contrast melodic horn lines over afro rhythms to recontextualize the traditions of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, forging a sound that **Dąbrowska** describes as “Firmly rooted in afrobeat on the one hand, **WAO** has been in constant process of development exploring new sounds and techniques. That is why I decided to smuggle my personal more pop vision into afrobeat without disturbing the character of **WAO** music”.\n\n“The new material is largely a continuation of **WAO** ’s initial path, which follows the combination of diverse European music elements on the ground of afrobeat. Eclecticism, combining various styles and genres make up the music of **WAO**. The new value is a more liberal approach to arrangements and compositions accompanied by a lot of focus on naturalness of the sound and avoiding overproduction during recordings.”\n\nThis fusion of styles and organic approach to recording renders _Antibody_ an album full of surprising turns as well as welcome pleasures for those familiar with their previous releases. "body": "\n\nFolks we are super hyped for this release from Locobeach - been a year or so in the making and now it's finally here! This dynamic supergroup has forged a sound blending cumbia pop and Latin disco with a psychedelic edge and now it's on wax. Their debut album is aptly titled **_Psychedelic Disco Cumbia_** and the official record release party for New York is on Halloween. \n\n\n\nMany of the songs on the album strike a unique balance between classic cumbias, Latin dance music, and psychedelic influences. The kickoff track “**Dream of the Bell Flower** ” really gets into the classic cumbias peruanas of groups like Los Mirlos, Los Wembler's and Los Destellos with a psychedelic guitar groove. The title is a reference to a family of flowers that grow in the Amazon all of which have various medicinal and hallucinogenic properties. “**Six on the Stairway to Seven”** is another composition with classic cumbias peruanas and 60’s psychedelic rock in mind. The title playing with references to some very famous classic rock songs, of course. “**Javelin** ” comes from the point of view of the colonized and marginalized. Sung in English with a deeper message, but still a danceable vibe.\n\n**“The Devil is a Charmer”** is a single already out and brings in some of the band’s favorite surf and spaghetti western influences on the tune; Ennio Morricone, The Ventures, and Dick Dale. The next single from the album is **“Rata”** which is influenced by chicha music. The song takes cues from the Peruvian scene and their use of electric guitars. The lyric refers to “so-called friends” that don’t behave and go behind your back, a.k.a. “rats.” For the DJs and late night sweaty vibes head to **“Guaracheo”** for a cumbia house track that goes off on the dancefloors.\n\nThe album is a perfect introduction to the LOCOBEACH sound, but only leaves you wanting to see them live. As Joshua states, “We are a well-oiled dance machine! People that have never heard of us before, will be up and dancing within the first song, we’re confident of that. At the end of the day we are a dance band and it’s our job to get the audience moving.” Catch them at a city near you as tour dates will be announced soon. Meantime check out these videos!",

"body": "\n\nThe latest effort by Puerto Rico’s salsa rebels **Orquesta El Macabeo** is a very timely cover version of th **Daniel Santos** anti-imperialist anthem **“Yankee Go Home”** appropriately coupled with the title song from their last LP, **“La Maldición Colonial”** on the flip side. In choosing to reinterpret “Yankee Go Home”, the original of which was released decades ago on the LP “Los Patriotas” (a joint release from Daniel “El Jefe” Santos and Pedro “Davilita” Ortiz Davila) as a daring protest song that sang “truth to power”, Orquesta El Macabeo give a fresh new take on the long, rich tradition of **Puerto Rican protest music** that fits in perfectly with current events on the island. The second half of the song features a spoken word section taken from the 1999 tune “Estado Colonial” from the cassette by the Boricua hardcore punk group **Actitud Subversiva**. As always, lead singer **Luis De La Rosa** inspires us with his distinctive vocal timbre and vigor, adding a sense of righteous indignation and playful critique to the urgent anti-colonial messages in the lyrics. The band, led by bassist **José Ibañez** and arranger/pianist **Aníbal Vidal Quintero** , backs Luis up with fierce and joyful playing that lends an air of celebration to an otherwise serious and heartfelt subject matter. \n\n\n\nThe edition is a hand-numbered release, consisting of a 7-inch, 33 1/3 RPM record with two songs. Extremely limited to a **Deluxe Edition** version of 150 in color (red white and blue splatter, each is unique) that comes with a special 7” Orquesta El Macabeo logo DJ slip mat, and 150 normal black copies. Each record also comes with a hand-splattered postcard featuring a special photo of the band (by Joshua Espinosa and Joey Oyola) on one side and the lyrics and credits on the other. Visit our store to purchase.\n\nTo hear **\"Yankee Go Home\"** : \n\nCheck out a smokin' live version of the B-side, **\"La Maldición Colonial\"** :\n\n**\n\n**\n\n \n\nInterview between **DJ Bongohead**(Peace & Rhythm) and **José Ibañez**(bassist / leader of Orquesta El Macabeo) about the single of “Yankee Go Home”.\n\n**Bongohead:** Explain a bit about how the recording was made.\n\n**José:**_We were looking for something cool to launch while completing the process of our double live album on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the orchestra, and it had long been considered a cover of this tune ... since we saw it as a natural fit to take it to our “Macabionic” style easily._\n\nWhat was the motivation to make this record?\n\n_Well, like I said previously, and besides that we think it has a good message ... and this topic (Daniel Santos and Davilita’s protest album “Los Patriotas”) is very little known by people in general. When the album was first issued, it was very close to the time when it was forbidden to use the Puerto Rican flag in public (the cover has the flag) ... they could give you up to a 10-year jail sentence. In Puerto Rico many people sympathize with the idea, but they don't like to say it in public. The syndrome of “colonial mentality” (the colonialized)._\n\nThe band has always had lyrics with socio-political content. How would you describe the role of that in your art? Whose idea was it to cover the song?\n\n_I think music is a means of expression and of transmitting messages. In our case, the message we wish to convey is one of awareness for the new generations. What better protest than the one that is perpetuated in a song? I do not remember exactly whose the idea was [to cover that particular song] but once I heard it I felt it would interesting to be performed by the orchestra at some point [the original is more in an acoustic ‘son conjunto’ style]._\n\nHow did you hear about the version of the “Yankee Go Home” song and the original album where it came from (Los Patriotas / Daniel Santos - Davilita)?\n\n_A bandmate (Yussef) came and brought me a copy on CD-R ... maybe about 8 years ago. I didn't know about this album before that._\n\nHow is it relevant for the band and today's things in your country?\n\n_I think the song was released at an important time for Puerto Rico, but that was without planning [ahead of time by us]. We would never take advantage of a social or political crisis to market our music. It is very relevant because it speaks of a problem that has stalked Puerto Rico for more than 500 years, and that is [our] country being the property and prisoner of another nation. Literally it translates as “Oh, blessed [be]!” but the expression is perhaps best understood as an all-purpose interjection or ‘holophrasis’ which resembles a lament in appearance but can in fact assume a wide range of connotations or be applied to virtually any context or mood. The term can be used to express (or be interpreted to express) pity, compassion, gratitude, concern, sarcasm, dismay, understanding, disapproval, disappointment, frustration, etc. How the term is interpreted largely depends on the inflection and intonation with which it is said. For instance, depending on the context, the inflection and the intonation with which the word is uttered, “¡Ay, Bendito!” could be translated as the following: “Dear Lord!”, “Oh, dear!”, “That's too bad, what a shame,” “That’s cute,” “That's the way things go” or “So it goes,” “I’m so happy for her,” “That was really selfless of you,” “Please, I insist!,” “She's so naive, I almost pity her,” “Damn!” or “Hot damn!”, etc.\n\n** Sofrito\n\nSofrito is a sauce used as a base in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Latin American cooking. Preparations may vary, but it typically consists of aromatic ingredients cut into small pieces and sauteed or braised in cooking oil in a frying pan or pot.\n\n*** Maví (or mabí)\n\nMauby, a tree bark and sugar cane drink made in the Caribbean. The bark and/or fruit of certain species in the genus Colubrina including Colubrina elliptica (also called behuco indio) and Colubrina arborescens, a small tree native to the northern Caribbean and south Florida, is used.\n\n\n\n**VERSÍON ESPAÑOL**\n\nEl último esfuerzo de los rebeldes de la salsa de Puerto Rico, Orquesta El Macabeo, es una versión de portada muy oportuna del himno antiimperialista de Daniel Santos \"Yankee Go Home\", junto con la canción del título de su último LP, \"La Maldición Colonial\". "html": "<p><img src=\"/images/IMG_8455_sm_large.jpg\" alt=\"\"></p>\n<p>The latest effort by Puerto Rico’s salsa rebels <strong>Orquesta El Macabeo</strong> is a very timely cover version of th <strong>Daniel Santos</strong> anti-imperialist anthem <strong>“Yankee Go Home”</strong> appropriately coupled with the title song from their last LP, <strong>“La Maldición Colonial”</strong> on the flip side. In choosing to reinterpret “Yankee Go Home”, the original of which was released decades ago on the LP “Los Patriotas” (a joint release from Daniel “El Jefe” Santos and Pedro “Davilita” Ortiz Davila) as a daring protest song that sang “truth to power”, Orquesta El Macabeo give a fresh new take on the long, rich tradition of <strong>Puerto Rican protest music</strong> that fits in perfectly with current events on the island. The second half of the song features a spoken word section taken from the 1999 tune “Estado Colonial” from the cassette by the Boricua hardcore punk group <strong>Actitud Subversiva</strong>. As always, lead singer <strong>Luis De La Rosa</strong> inspires us with his distinctive vocal timbre and vigor, adding a sense of righteous indignation and playful critique to the urgent anti-colonial messages in the lyrics. The band, led by bassist <strong>José Ibañez</strong> and arranger/pianist <strong>Aníbal Vidal Quintero</strong> , backs Luis up with fierce and joyful playing that lends an air of celebration to an otherwise serious and heartfelt subject matter.</p>\n<p><img src=\"/images/IMG_8519_crop_sm_63cd78fa-c3ea-4079-b8ec-7ae77ac2fd61_large.jpg\" alt=\"\"></p>\n<p>The edition is a hand-numbered release, consisting of a 7-inch, 33 1/3 RPM record with two songs. When the album was first issued, it was very close to the time when it was forbidden to use the Puerto Rican flag in public (the cover has the flag) … they could give you up to a 10-year jail sentence. In Puerto Rico many people sympathize with the idea, but they don’t like to say it in public. The syndrome of “colonial mentality” (the colonialized).</em></p>\n<p>The band has always had lyrics with socio-political content. How would you describe the role of that in your art? Whose idea was it to cover the song?</p>\n<p><em>I think music is a means of expression and of transmitting messages. In our case, the message we wish to convey is one of awareness for the new generations. What better protest than the one that is perpetuated in a song? I do not remember exactly whose the idea was [to cover that particular song] but once I heard it I felt it would interesting to be performed by the orchestra at some point [the original is more in an acoustic ‘son conjunto’ style].</em></p>\n<p>How did you hear about the version of the “Yankee Go Home” song and the original album where it came from (Los Patriotas / Daniel Santos - Davilita)?</p>\n<p><em>A bandmate (Yussef) came and brought me a copy on CD-R … maybe about 8 years ago. I didn’t know about this album before that.</em></p>\n<p>How is it relevant for the band and today’s things in your country?</p>\n<p><em>I think the song was released at an important time for Puerto Rico, but that was without planning [ahead of time by us]. We would never take advantage of a social or political crisis to market our music. It is very relevant because it speaks of a problem that has stalked Puerto Rico for more than 500 years, and that is [our] country being the property and prisoner of another nation. Literally it translates as “Oh, blessed [be]!” but the expression is perhaps best understood as an all-purpose interjection or ‘holophrasis’ which resembles a lament in appearance but can in fact assume a wide range of connotations or be applied to virtually any context or mood. The term can be used to express (or be interpreted to express) pity, compassion, gratitude, concern, sarcasm, dismay, understanding, disapproval, disappointment, frustration, etc. How the term is interpreted largely depends on the inflection and intonation with which it is said. "body": "After the departure into James Brown afro-Latin-funk territory for _Heavy Hustling_ , the Latin soul adventures of the Boogaloo Destroyers, side projects like the tropical psychedelia concept album _Go South/Vaya Pa’l Sur_ by Los Terrificos with Jake Fader and several solo recordings under his own name that had a digital dance culture feel to them, Ray Lugo is back with the full band Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra in what is being hailed as a “return to form” featuring the classic Fela-influenced yet highly original sound forged on earlier records like _Love International _(2007) and _More Consideration_(2004). Though not exactly a reunion album—the band haven’t stopped recording and touring together in one form another for the past 18 years—Lugo contends _100 Fevers_ is the best representation of what Kokolo has always been, an “eclectic mélange of influences that reflect what is going on within us as a band as well as in our lives at that particular moment in time” which “further expand[s] Kokolo’s search for the funkiest groove,” a quest that Lugo hopes “never ends” but which he feels has benefitted by the band stepping back and “let[ting] our sound ‘breathe’ a bit and return with a fresher outlook.”\n\n \n\nThe record is fresh indeed and illustrates what Lugo calls “the variety of moods that exists in life itself” and it’s this eclecticism and variety that makes the album an invigorating experience from start to finish. “Recording variations of the same idea over and over has never held interest for me” admits Lugo, and one gets the feeling his band members must feel the same way. Working with Casey Howard (Saxophone), Chris Morrow (Trombone), Neil Chastain (Drums/Congas), Kavin Paulraj (Bass), Andy Averbuch (Guitar) and Jake Fader (Guitar) for so long certainly facilitated the album recording process because at this point Lugo feels “we all know each other quite well both on stage and in the studio” and “the band and I have been very fortunate to experience many wonderful things together over the years, but time has also brought about changes to each of us and these songs reflect some of this collective evolution.” There are elements of Colombian cumbia and champeta, Latin funk, reggae, ska, Brazilian, house, disco, psychedelic, and jazz elements, calypso, salsa, even gospel (with secular, double entendre lyrics!), as well as electronic beats and DJ looping and mixing techniques blending with organic, acoustic orchestral sounds, plus some mean guitar and of course African roots from high life and soukous to the Nigerian mother load called afrobeat. As with previous Kokolo releases, Spanish and Portuguese vocals are in as much evidence as English ones. Special guests include Jo Jojo Kuo from Cameroon and Elani from Brazil. Every tune is danceable but each has its own vibe from up to down tempo, protest to dance culture, social justice to hedonism. The record comes with an insert featuring an interview with Lugo, full credits and lyrics. The album ends with the lilting, mellow _La Buena Fe_ , a track that points to the central theme of the record. “If nothing else, the message I like for people to take away from listening to Kokolo or seeing us live is this: positivity,” concludes Lugo. We live “in a world often filled with drama and problems,” and so Lugo “would like to think that being positive, thankful, can account for something. It provides an alternative.” Put the whole thing together and you get a heady mix that is sure to pass the fever on to whoever listens.",

In 2016 our label released a 45 of two dance floor tracks from the album (\"Dicen\" / \"When We Love\") just in time for us to present them, along with **Deans Beans** Fair Trade Coffee, on the stage at **Green River Festival** that same year. But making a 45 was never enough for us; it was always a dream of ours to get the whole first album out on glorious vinyl and we are really excited that that has now become a reality! Why? Yes, you heard right, Cuban rock ‘n’ roll has an ‘abuelo’ — maybe you didn’t know there even was such a thing as ‘el rock cubano’ — but there is, and even if he’s not a household name, Iván Fariñas should be, as he’s extremely talented and is arguably the oldest still practicing _rockero_ from behind The Mango Curtain since he started in the 1950s. He claims to have written and recorded the first Cuban blues-rock tune in English — over 40 years ago. Fariñas founded his current group Viento Solar (Solar Wind) in 1975 and was not able to record his music officially until the late 1990s. Though his recordings are known somewhat in Europe and South America, his official physical releases are not distributed beyond Cuba and he remains undiscovered in the United States. Now for the first time outside of Cuba Ivan’s intriguing life story and a selection of recordings of his long-lived band Viento Solar will finally be made available for the world to enjoy, thanks to Peace & Rhythm and Feeding Tube Records. **_Bloomer Plástico _**collects rare versions of some of Fariñas best compositions, recordings unheard outside Cuba that come from several “maketas” (_maquetas_ or demos) that pre-date his official studio productions and were recorded on reel-to-reel tape from 1996-2001, though some of the songs were originally composed in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s when rock was largely an underground phenomenon on the island. The collection ranges from metallic heavy rock with a punky edge to blues-rock, with a sprinkling of psychedelic and even some distinctly Cuban touches. "body": "****\n\n**Peace & Rhythm** is very excited to announce today the new release b **MAKU Soundsystem** , **5 Fuegos**! Their fifth release finds the Brooklyn-based, self-proclaimed “immigrant beat” band with a fresh new stripped down sound of five players: bass, guitar, drums, percussion, and vocals. Appropriately, the emphasis is on the beat, and while the brass section and keyboards are now gone, the principle vocalists **Liliana Conde** (who plays electronic percussion as well) and bassist **Juan Ospina** are still leading the charge with their stirringly emotional voices out front. Also as before, the heartfelt lyrics inspire you to feel with your heart while you dance to the polyrhythms with your feet. And as on their last Peace & Rhythm release **The Mix** , **MAKU Soundsystem** 's dynamic duo front peeps Liliana and Juan are supported by guitarist **Camilo Rodríguez** , **Andrés Jiménez** on drum kit, and master percussionist **Moris Cañate** on _tambor alegre_ (folkloric Colombian hand drum) with all three sharing backing vocals. **5 Fuegos** means “Five Fires” and is named for the five members of the band as well as the five songs on the record. The EP features five smoking psychedelic tunes full of originality, hot rocking Afro-funk and deep Colombian roots, each one energized by a burning inner light. The title also alludes to the fact that there are many kinds of fire, encompassing a multitudinous spectrum from destruction to healing, from glowing black coals to illuminating flame, and thus it’s important to recognize the wholeness of it, the good coming out of the bad. Their fifth release finds the Brooklyn-based, self-proclaimed “immigrant beat” band with a fresh new stripped down sound of five players: bass, guitar, drums, percussion, and vocals. Appropriately, the emphasis is on the beat, and while the brass section and keyboards are now gone, the principle vocalists <strong>Liliana Conde</strong> (who plays electronic percussion as well) and bassist <strong>Juan Ospina</strong> are still leading the charge with their stirringly emotional voices out front. Also as before, the heartfelt lyrics inspire you to feel with your heart while you dance to the polyrhythms with your feet. And as on their last Peace & Rhythm release <strong>The Mix</strong> , <strong>MAKU Soundsystem</strong> ‘s dynamic duo front peeps Liliana and Juan are supported by guitarist <strong>Camilo Rodríguez</strong> , <strong>Andrés Jiménez</strong> on drum kit, and master percussionist <strong>Moris Cañate</strong> on <em>tambor alegre</em> (folkloric Colombian hand drum) with all three sharing backing vocals. <strong>5 Fuegos</strong> means “Five Fires” and is named for the five members of the band as well as the five songs on the record. The EP features five smoking psychedelic tunes full of originality, hot rocking Afro-funk and deep Colombian roots, each one energized by a burning inner light. The title also alludes to the fact that there are many kinds of fire, encompassing a multitudinous spectrum from destruction to healing, from glowing black coals to illuminating flame, and thus it’s important to recognize the wholeness of it, the good coming out of the bad.
